Volkswagen Ignition Barrel Jammed or Key Won’t Turn?

A Volkswagen ignition barrel that is jammed, stiff or refusing to turn is a problem we regularly see at Lockwise Locksmiths. In many cases, the key itself isn’t actually the cause. A failure can occur inside the ignition lock housing, preventing the ignition mechanism from operating correctly even when the original key is still in good condition.

Several Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda models use similar ignition lock and steering lock components, including versions of the commonly encountered 1K0 905 851 ignition housing family. There are different revisions and applications, so the correct diagnosis is important before replacing parts.

At Lockwise Locksmiths, we diagnose and repair Volkswagen ignition problems from our Hillcrest workshop and throughout Brisbane’s southside and Logan. Depending on the vehicle and the failure, the ignition may be repairable without replacing the complete key and immobiliser system.

Common Volkswagen Ignition Barrel Problems

Customers describe this fault in several different ways. You might notice that:

  • the Volkswagen key won’t turn in the ignition
  • the ignition barrel is jammed
  • the key becomes increasingly difficult or stiff to turn
  • the key turns partially but will not start the vehicle
  • the key becomes stuck in the ignition
  • the steering lock or ignition mechanism will not release
  • the ignition works intermittently
  • the ignition switch fails to operate correctly

These symptoms don’t necessarily mean the key or ignition barrel itself is worn out.

The Ignition Housing Can Be the Actual Problem

One of the failures we encounter involves a small cast component inside the ignition housing. When this component wears, cracks or breaks, the movement of the key can no longer operate the ignition mechanism correctly.

This is particularly important because simply replacing or recutting the key may not fix the problem.

We have dismantled these units and seen the internal failure first-hand. The photos on this page show an actual failed component from an ignition housing, rather than a generic stock image. Understanding what has failed internally allows us to determine whether the existing assembly can be repaired or whether components need to be replaced.Broken Volkswagen ignition housing component causing jammed ignition barrel

Is It the Key, Ignition Barrel, Housing or Ignition Switch?

This is where an experienced automotive locksmith can be useful.

A worn key can certainly cause ignition problems, but there are several components involved in the system. Depending on the vehicle, the fault could be related to the key blade, ignition lock cylinder/barrel, ignition housing, steering lock mechanism or electrical ignition switch.

We also occasionally see ignition switches fail, which can produce different symptoms from a mechanical ignition housing failure.

Rather than assuming that a key that won’t turn automatically means a new ignition barrel is required, we diagnose the mechanism and determine what is actually preventing it from operating.

Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda Ignition Systems

Many vehicles within the Volkswagen Group share related components and engineering. That means similar ignition housing failures can appear across Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda vehicles, although the exact part, revision and removal procedure varies between models.

Some vehicles are relatively straightforward to access, while others have additional components around the steering column that need to be removed before the ignition assembly can be properly accessed.

This is one reason we recommend diagnosing the vehicle rather than ordering an ignition housing based purely on an online part-number listing.

Can a Jammed Volkswagen Ignition Be Repaired?

Often, yes.

Whether the original ignition can be repaired depends on exactly what has failed and whether other components have been damaged. Catching the problem while the ignition is becoming stiff can also be considerably better than continuing to force the key until something fails completely.

Where practical, retaining the vehicle’s existing key operation is preferable to unnecessarily replacing multiple components.

If your VW key is getting difficult to turn, don’t wait until you’re stranded with an ignition that won’t move at all.
